2GETHER for Health Promotion: Strengthening Communities, Advancing Equity – ASAB CoP F2F Meeting
As part of the Health Promotion Program’s (HPP) second anniversary celebration, the Alcohol, Substances, and Addictive Behaviors Community of Practice (ASAB CoP) held a face-to-face meeting to reconnect, reflect, and refocus efforts toward a shared goal: promoting health and well-being through evidence-informed and community-centered approaches.
Reaffirming a Shared Purpose
Formed in 2024, the ASAB CoP was established to foster collaboration among professionals, researchers, and alcohol control advocates addressing the complex challenges of alcohol, substance use, and addiction. The CoP provides a space to share experiences, surface innovative ideas, and collectively shape solutions that support healthier communities.
This year’s gathering brought members together to revisit the CoP’s vision and renew their commitment to advancing public health through joint action. The meeting served as both a checkpoint and a springboard—marking how far the group has come and where it hopes to go.
Looking Back to Move Forward
The event opened with reflections on the CoP’s ongoing journey. Members discussed the progress made in convening stakeholders, launching educational activities, and supporting research efforts. Conversations also highlighted lessons learned from past initiatives, including the importance of clear communication, sustained engagement, and inclusive planning.
There was consensus on the need to build on existing momentum and continue fostering a collaborative culture within the CoP—one that embraces diverse voices, values evidence, and remains responsive to the needs of the community.
Strengthening Research and Engagement
A key focus of the meeting was aligning future plans with ongoing research and outreach efforts. Members underscored the importance of generating and applying evidence to inform policies and practices that reduce harm and promote health. There was also emphasis on expanding public engagement, raising awareness of alcohol and substance-related issues, and encouraging more proactive participation from local actors and institutions.
The group expressed interest in building stronger links between research findings and policy discussions, particularly at the local level where implementation often begins. There was strong recognition of the CoP’s potential to serve as a bridge between data, decision-making, and community realities.
Exploring Opportunities Ahead
Looking to the future, participants discussed upcoming initiatives aimed at deepening the CoP’s impact. A culminating activity is planned later this year, which will bring together partners, amplify key messages, and showcase the CoP’s contributions to policy and practice. Members also explored opportunities to engage more sectors, expand membership, and pursue joint projects that reflect shared goals.
The meeting made clear that while progress has been made, there is still much work to be done. It also reinforced that with collaboration, mutual trust, and a focus on equity, meaningful change is not only possible—but within reach.
Continuing the Journey Together
The ASAB CoP’s face-to-face meeting underscored the value of coming together—whether to share ideas, address challenges, or celebrate milestones. As the community moves forward, it remains committed to harnessing collective knowledge, advocating for stronger policies, and empowering individuals and institutions to take action.
Together, the CoP stands as a testament to the power of partnership in building a healthier, alcohol-free society.
